Description
English: "Portvale" in Flinders Parade, Sandgate, Qld - circa 1920. "Portvale" was demolished in 1990.It was the home of Queensland's most celebrated civil engineer, George Phillips. He came to Australia from England in 1863, and moved to Queensland in 1862. He worked as a government surveyor in the north until moving to Brisbane in 1874. For 40 years Phillips made Sandgate his home. He was one of the founders of the Baptist Church in Louden Street, and twice served on the Town Council. Miss Dorothy Phillips married Charles Joshua Jeays. The property is now the site of Housing Commission Units. (information from the Sandgate Historical Museum)
