hat such cerebralhaemorrhage may be differentiated from haemorrhage occurring later in life bythe absence of inflammation of the arachnoid and of the dura mater. Menin-geal haemorrhage in the newT-born is often accompanied by subpleural ecchy-moses ; death usually results suddenly. A most valuable recent contribution tothe literature of this subject is that of Spencer. In a total of 180 bodies exam-ined, 130 were in a condition which enabled a critical examination of thetissues to be made: in 85 injuries to the brain were found, consisting of con-gestion and haemorrhage; these conditions varied in severity, in situation, andin extent. (Edema was a frequent accompaniment. The children had beendelivered in various wTays, and many of the cases occurred in children thesubjects of disease. The accompanying plate shows a typical condition ofmeningeal haemorrhage (Plate I.). Its frequency will be appreciated whenit is known that 4^ per cent, of all haemorrhages occurring in the new- PLATE I.
